Sandy's new downtown

Does it come as a surprise to anyone that Mayor Tom Dolan wants to "now" make a new downtown for Sandy with the stadium development at its center?  Wasn't that the idea all along?  I don't see how this comes as a surprise to anyone.  As for Greg Curtis bringing home the pork for his home district, isn't that why he was elected?  What else do we send these people to the Legislature for but to look out for our local interests at the state level?  While I'm sure plenty are pissed off at what has been termed lies and corruption, what else do you expect from a politician?  I don't even see this as corrupt, it was a pretty straight forward.  I just fail to see how a mayor promoting development in his city is a bad thing.  I am more concerned when a mayor fights progress and tries to keep the status quo instead of improving his city.

From one of my favorite movies, Kingdom of Heaven, "What man is a man who does not make the world better?"

      Success is not politically correct!

IF you are a fiscally conservative republican, you are NOT elected to bring home the pork. But it seems that most Utahn's only care about those who are SOCIALLY conservative and have forgotten about the other part. Hell, it seems that most republicans have forgotten about fical conservatism. Reagan would be ashamed that Bill Clinton was the last president to balance the budget.

It's funny you talk about Reagan being fiscally conservative when he was responsible for how much of our national debt?  $4 trillion right?  That's almost 33% of our current debt level, which it's sad to say has mostly been incurred in the last 8 years.  And then we wonder why the dollar is in free fall mode right now.

The uproar surrounding this development makes me laugh. Sure, many (if not most) people think a development such as this would better complement downtown SLC than "downtown" Sandy, but this is a private development, and private developers have the freedom to build wherever they please (and wherever they find willing and helpful governments).

Really, SLC has been trying to build this kind of a theater for how long now? We can add that to SLC's already impressive legacy of failure and political impotence.

One of Salt Lake's biggest problems is its inability to see beyond itself - and consequently suffers from a inflated sense of entitlement. Utah County is the second largest county in the state (and growing) and Salt Lake County is growing primarily in the South and Southwest regions. Tom Dolan is successfully building a new downtown - a downtown that is more accessible than the existing one for a large number of people. Sandy will never replace SLC, but it will do well as a supplement.

On a side note, imagine the outrage if the NFL or MLB ever decided to locate in Utah (because Dolan has already stated his intentions to attract both)!

I think you say a lot of truth here.  While SLC dicks around, Sandy makes it happen.  What's really interesting in terms of the stadium is that the biggest knock has been lack of things to do in the area, this development will certainly help to change that.
