RSLFM, this is just sick, I cannot believe you would stoop this low and put something like today's posting on your site.  Comparing the deaths of 9 people to the woes of a soccer team is just twisted.  Yes RSL is the perrenial cellar dwellers of MLS for the last 3 years and yes the fans deserve better, but that has very little parallel to the Crandall Canyon mine disaster.  If the worst case with RSL is that they either fold or move, the lives of the fans will honestly change in minor ways at most.  There are 9 families without members now which is so many levels above soccer that they do not bear comparing.  I cannot think of a single person in immenent danger of life or limb because of any failings on the part of Jason Kreis.  Sorry, but this just steps over way too many lines.  I don't mind mixing football with politics, but comparing the trainwreck that is RSL with the deaths of 9 people just goes way beyond the pale.

To be simple, as much as I love soccer and care about RSL, it's just a game for entertainment.  The mine disaster is far from that.

I consider this on the level of people who post death counters for the Iraq war in order to get attention.  Prime example, Mike Norton in Layton who thankfully no longer has his war memorial up since he lost all the attention he was getting because the city caused such a stink about it.  When I was serving in the Army, nothing bothered me more than being used as a prop for some politician at a photo op.  This is just like that.

The comparison was between the leadership ability of Murray and Kreis. It had nothing to do with comparing 9 deaths with RSL's record. C'mon now Donk. And what irony that you--a member of RCB would be so "offended". RCB is known for spewing the most vile insults at opposing players, coaches & fans imanginable.

There's nothing wrong with a detailed comparison of leadership & crises management skills. I happen to think the two men suffer from many of the same shortcomings.

You of course are free to disagree--but don't hide behind the name of the dead miners. BTW, their own angry families tend to agree with my assessment of Murray.

Oh man. Someone should get a stern lecture for that one.

Also, Donk, thanks for serving our beautiful country and making it possible to say stupid stuff like that! It makes me honored to read your blog.

Small side story - a couple weeks ago during Seafair (Seattle's fleet and maritime week) I went up to some sailors after the Portland match and thanked them for serving our country. One of them asked if I was serious and then told me that most people actually go up to him and *boo*, *hiss* or whatever just to take the piss out of 'em. Now I don't think that our country is doing the right things, but whose fault is that really? If I ever saw someone taking the piss out of ANYONE that served this country (as long as the person didn't do something truly heinous) I would give them a stern lecture about respect. I hate how cliche it is, but "Freedom isn't free." It is earned in blood.

Most certainly it is not the junior soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines who made the decision to go to Iraq.  It's pretty telling that 8 generals resigned rather than issue orders for Iraq.  I have just been at a seminar for the last three days dealing with that and am working on a paper that follows the money of various political interest groups that did help influence our decision to go to war.  I can't wait for next year when the evangelical Christians finally lose power and this country can start heading away from the stone age like those people in that interest group wish us to head.  I will post more on my project, but just simply, if you get the chance, read the paper published by John Mearsheimer from the University of Chicago and Stephen Walt from Harvard ( link) for one part of my background info.

I understand people being upset about Iraq, they should be, but taking it out on a service member  is not the thing to do.  Pretty tasteless actually.  What is truly sad about Iraq is that we let the chance we had to establish peace there slip through our fingers.  To me the turning point was when we allowed the looting to go on without doing anything to stop it because we didn't have the troops and nobody issued orders to stop it.  We didn't listen to General Shinseki (among others) when he told Congress that his military opinion was that we didn't have enough troops scheduled to deploy.  We let Paul Bremmer disband the Iraqi military who was willing to help us and had the ability to stop the looting and establish order (and still does) and by disbanding the military, we put over a million people out of work who had weapons and training.  I can understand talking Iraqis eing upset.  Under Saddam, they had running water and electricity and could walk the streets without worrying about who was going to try to kidnap, kill or rape them.  Saddam was bad but at least people's basic needs were being met much better than anything we've done over there.

      Hey,

I don't know if you remembered me, I was standing next to you at the end of the Chicago game. I've been a big fan of your blog and of your posts on bigsoccer. I completely agree with the disgusting comparison that RSLFM made on her page. Please continue to post and blog, I enjoy reading it.

To make one reply, first to this one, yes I remember you and thanks for the complimentary post.

For Paul, I won't be able to make the next game.  I scheduled my classes so I only have to be on campus on Wednesdays, but that meant I have to be there almost all day including a class that goes from 5-8.  Next week is the first week of the semester and I really don't want to miss the first day of class.  I'm a bit upset at this, and really upset that the LA game is also on a Wednesday so I will probably miss that one too.  Regardless, this is my last semester for my BA so I'll just have to deal with it.

RSLFM, the leadership style of Jason Kreis is not going to kill anyone.  There's a huge difference here.  Jason Kreis may not be the best coach, but he certainly is not negligent to the point of being responsible for killing 9 people.  Safety violations in a mine are on a completely different level than making mistakes that violate league rules and get a fine.  League rules on who you can talk to or not and what color you wear are nothing near as serious as violating safety rules and putting people's lives in danger.  Sure it cost the team some money to dress in white kits, but who's in danger from that?  Kreis' record can be chalked up to inexperience and starting with a basically bare cupboard.  Kreis however is far from negligent.  Murray's negligence cost lives because quite frankly he didn't care enough about those he was responsible for to make the needed corrections.  Kreis on the other hand is making the needed corrections and is making the effort to improve that was lacking at Crandall Canyon, for example, he brought in a very good defensive midfielder, a spot RSL has been missing from day 1.  Kreis is making obvious efforts to change the culture of the team; Murray did not change the unsafe culture of the mine.  That's the difference between ignorance and negligence.
