Cunningham to Toronto for a first round draft pick and Esky?  WTF?!?!?  Ok, who's the brilliant one who engineered this clusterfuck of gigantic proportions?  I am pretty fucking sick of this horseshit.  I am really close to calling my ticket rep and asking for a refund.  What happened to playoffs or bust?  I guess we chose bust.  To me, the trade seems to indicate that RSL has completely given up on the season.  I can understand trading Cunningham to upgrade where we are severely missing, but as was evidenced against Dallas, without him, we don't hvae much of an offensive punch.  I like Esky a lot, but he's nowhere near what Cunningham brings to the table.  Now watch we get Kasey Keller now.

I like Keller, but as was shown at M'gladbach this year, if you leave him stranded, he can't make many saves.  Right now our defense is comparable to swiss cheese, so having him here for a $400,000 cap hit when that same unt of money could bring in 3 players that are pretty solid, like Nate Jaqua and Chris Albright from LA, Brian Mullen and Paul Dalglish from Houston and quite a few others in that price range.  If we weren't bleeding from about 4 holes, we would be fine, but this whole thing seems extremely stupid.

I would be happy about the draft pick except that RSL has such a proven track record of developing young players, like Nic Besagno for example.  Not to mention, at the rate we're going, we are going to have the #1 pick anyway because we're in last place and not getting any better.  I just just don't know what to think anymore.  This is just beyond belief.

On a talent for talent basis, this deal makes no sense. But there's more to it than that. Esky's personality probably fits much more in the locker room culture that Jason Kreis wants to create, a culture where all players will run all day and fight and bleed for their team. Esky does that, every game. Cunningham, talented as he is, did not. So this is the first true move of the Jason Kreis regime, and it is one I think that while you give up some talent, may rally the team overall to a better level of play.

I'm hoping d is right. Between Esky's drive, the cap room, and a second first rounder in 2008, there may be some long term benefit here.

On the other hand, I'm not sure where we're gonna be getting the goals/assists that Cunningham was giving the team.

I know D is right about Esky when he talks about his drive and heart.  Before I followed RSL I followed DC United and he was always fun to watch.  That being said, I don't think Esky will ever get 16 goals and 11 assists in a season.  I would feel a lot better about this trade but RSL just has such a great record with developing young talent.  The top 2 picks in the draft would be great if RSL could actually do something worthwhile with them.  Right now we have 2 #1 draft picks and a #2 pick, not including Esky, so talent isn't really the issue.  I hope he can bring the drive that we so urgently need.  I know he has the heart, he will run until his legs fall off and then crawl as far as you ask him to.  I just don't think that given RSL's track record, though, that this will work out for us giving up our leading scorer and main scoring threat.  I will wait and see what RSL does with a draft pick, but I just don't see this being a good trade on RSL's side.  I am excited to see Cunningham get paired with Dichio, that should be a great combination. I will be cheering on July 4th for Cunningham's first RES hat trick.

I don't agree with Rocky Anderson much, but he said that everyone involved with RSL has done everything possible to screw things up. And so it continues. We will not get the 1st pick next year because I just found out that the Quakes are being resurrected. (BTW--I don't agree with this because I understand that Vancouver will open a 16,000 seat stadium for their USL team next year. Could it be that MLS is afraid of a city that still has NASL roots...but I digress.)

Cunningham can score, but RSL needs a leader on the field who can get get their collective asses in gear. Esky is the man who can do that.

Another BTW--The Fire are slumping too. Sunday is our best shot at getting a W before the FCD on flag day.

I wouldn't hold my breath about the Quakes coming back.  There have been a couple of deals that have fallen through so fan with them.  I know MLS wants to be in the market, but a team without a stadium (or in New England's case a blace to play that is owned by their owners even if it isn't really soccer specific) is finacially crippled.  I do not know though if Vancouver is even interested in getting MLS.  I don't think Rochester really is, at least not their ownership group.  The operating costs with MLS are way higher than with USL so with a 16,000 seat soccer stadium, a USL team can operate in the black where an MLS team could not.
