Notice the scarf he's wearing!!!!  I know there are plenty of things to improve on.  If the team plays with the intensity they showed in the second half, they are going to be hard to beat.  If they don't control the midfield like what happened in the first half, things will be ugly.  And yes, it sucks to know that we pare paying Clint Mathis (who is still one of my favorite players in the league) a lot of money to score goals on us.  Eddie Pope I have to hand it to, his yellow turned out to be in my opinion the turning point of the match.  That got the crowd and the team fired up.  Of all people Chris Brown scoring a goal!  I thought the sub was great, how can you really question a sub that got us an equalizer like that?

Now comes the real test for Coach Kreis.  How does he adjust with a whole week of practice.  Yes it's a short week, but how does he keep the momentum that was built up going?  If we come out against Colorado like we did in the last 10 minutes of the game last night, Colorado does not stand a chance.  Thankfully, because there are few things I hate more than the cRapids.

In other news, according to AYL Luis Tejada has been cut.  Much as I was excited to see him, when he showed up as out of shape as me, he was just waiting for this to happen.  The interesting thing now is that with Kreis' $160,000 salary and Tejada's $105,000 we now have a lot of cap room and a free DP slot.  I know who I would love to see in an RSL kit, Roberto Carlos.  I don't think it's very likely, but who knows, maybe the relationship we've built with Real Madrid will bear some fruit.  Especially since his contract expires in June and we could get him on a free transfer.  Our back line could use the help and the things that guy can do to a ball on a free kick are amazing.

Roberto Carlos would be cool, but I still think Kasey Keller would provide a better long term value (i.e., he'd stay in the area after his playing days and still be able to contribute to the team).

I doubt Keller would stay around Utah when he has a castle in Germany to go to.  A goalkeeper is wasted if the back line isn't improved dramatically.  I see Seitz as a Tim Howard level talent and I would rather see him getting the reps at keeper than Keller who isn't going to be playing for much longer.  To sum it up, the team would be best served with a quality back line because I think our keeper situation is generally good, if they are not left out stranded.  Both Mathis goals Saturday were because of defensive breakdowns, especially his second.  Torres missed marking him and gave him way too much space in front of the goal and if you can get a cross like that into Clint Mathis' head from 6 yards out, he is going to score.

Also, to clarify, I think Keller should hang it up with the US team, he's not going to be around for 2010, so why not let someone like Howard who will be around for that the reps?

I'm taking my "he'll hang around" optimisim from the SI piece of last month, which mentioned that he has school aged kids that he wouldn't want to uproot after signing with a US based club and that the Pacific Northwest/Mountainwest make good landing spots for him.

If Kasey were in fact likely to hang around, I think he'd be very good for Chris in the long run.

You're right though that we need some serious back line help, and Roberto Carlos would be an awesome addition.

Further looking at the numbers, I don't even think the DP slot is worth the money.  $400,000 to the salary cap is a huge hit, especially considering that you can get an excellent MLS veteran like Eddie Pope makes about $260,000.  Adding it up, for the price of 1 DP you can get 2 solid MLS level players and a developmental player.  Sharlie Joseph comes to mind, and I think New England would give him up for an allocation, which RSL got when Kreis retired as a player, and if they gave him a raise, he would probably come out and play.  I know he plays d-mid, but given the choice of him or Talley, Joseph is a better choice and Talley would still be around as a great sub or could be moved somewhere else.  Just a thought, but I think it's better than a DP, more value for the money.
